Rovio, the Finnish game developer best known for its immensely popular (and overrated) game, Angry Birds, announced today that they had 263 million active users in December. Interestingly enough, Rovio’s popularity due to the smash hit of their Angry Birds franchise has escalated them where more people play their games than use Twitter. And of course, the company doesn’t plan on stopping there.

Over 260 million active users for our games means one thing: We're not stopping here! Thanks everyone! #quarterofabillion

It’s an impressive feat, no doubt, as Angry Birds first showed itself to world in late 2009, about 3 years after Twitter was made.

If you need a proper analogy for Angry Bird’s success, you could probably say it’s the rage comics of gaming. The franchise, which has seen a couple of spin-offs like the recent godawful Star Wars crossover (how long until they release an inevitable Lego Star Wars version?), has still remained as one of the most downloaded game ever in both the iOS and Android app market. Their non-Angry Birds game, Amazing Alex, however, didn’t fare so well compared to Rovio’s other titles.

With that in mind, who knows how far Rovio can go with Angry Birds. It’s not very well received within the gaming community, to no surprise, yet its success remains untouched. In many cases, it’s one of the first games a lot of people download when they first get their hands on a new phone or tablet.

Who knows when the world will be able to shut up about it.
